We're in the NICU-will update later. Things are going okay. Keep us in your prayers!
Okay - here is the update from Tammy's mom....
Here is the new little one. He was put under the bili lights during the first night for jaundice and they transferred him to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit. (St. Luke's doesn't have an in between baby unit so ANYTHING slightly not normal goes to the NICU, not just really sick kids so let's wait and see.... )
Jaundice in brand newborn babies is not so common. They ran tests and decided that he has an infectious process going on somewhere along with the jaundice. He will not be coming home until maybe next Thursday- June 5th (Happy Birthday Toby!) It could be related to the meconium in the amniotic fluid.
A quick medical lesson - babies in the womb do not pass any stool unless they are stressed. This fetal stool is called meconium and if it is present in the amniotic fluid when the baby is born - it means that he did have some stress. And the risk is that he may breath in some of that fluid which could cause a pneumonia or other problems. That is why the NICU nurses were in the delivery room when Tammy gave birth and why Toby couldn't deliver the baby. He was at risk because of the meconium stained amniotic fluid. They worked with him at birth and suctioned his lungs and did some respiratory therapy. He was running a fever also at birth.
Toby says that St. Luke's has a great NICU so he is in good hands. She can still nurse him (and she is doing great with that too.) Tammy is amazing. I have never had as hard a birth as she went through, INCLUDING MY NATURAL ONES. She is very sore and swollen and beat up. But she is smiling! Toby is a wonderful support! Thank you for all your prayers! Enjoy the photos. He is precious!
Today (Saturday) they took him off the overhead bili lights and we can hold him more often with just the bili blanket. He has an IV in for the antibiotics and that is why he has to stay in the hospital - to finish the round of medicine for this unknown source of infection. His labs are all much better and now at 4 days old he is an old hat at being poked, meeting new nurses and having his diapers weighed (how embarrassing!) He is also getting used to many kisses and us telling him that he is the most handsome baby in all of the hospital - with the most hair!!!!
Is this not the most beautiful baby? I'm thinking the hospital is making up reasons to keep him just because he is sooooooo cute.
